I'm Hungry...Let's Read!

It's that time of the year again when many of us, including me, are dieting. Because of that, we are HUNGRY! What a good time to snuggle down with your favorite child or with your favorite class and read books about food.
The following are some of my favorites!
All book covers are courtesy of Titlewave.com.
This is such a cute big, bad wolf!

Fun book for reading and for doing an art activity.
Also featured in a lesson plan for teaching the reading skill of "Characterization" in my book Crash Bang Boom: Exploring Literary Devices Through Children's Literature.

Love the illustrations in this book.

You don't have to wait for Christmas to make Gingerbread men.
Sendac, the author of Where the Wild Things Are,
has written many books and this is one of his classics.

OK, this is a food stretch, but who can forget the LIMA BEANS???

I haven't seen the movie yet! Have you? This is featured in Crash Bang Boom for teaching the reading skill of "Cause and Effect".

There are many versions of the folk tale Stone Soup, but I like this one by Jon Muth the best.

I'm not a huge Dr. Seuss fan, but this is a classic. I had to buy it for my daughter at age 16 because she was jealous that everyone else knew the words and she didn't.

Big Anthony's Spaghetti is amazing!

I love just about anything by Tomie dePaola.

If you are familiar with Make Way for Ducklings, this is by the same author.
It is a real classic.

During dieting time, I could rename this "The Very Hungry Blogger".

I learned of this book when my children were little and watching Reading Rainbow.

There's technically no eating in this book, but I LOVE it and an egg is food,
so I choose to feature it whenever possible.

Thank you Laura Numeroff for so many great food books. This is also featured in Crash Bang Boom for teaching the reading skill of "Cause and Effect".

This one is for my friend Michael.

I hope you have enjoyed our little tour through Foodland.
I think I'll go get some Hot Cocoa and a Cookie.
I'd love to hear about some of your favorite children's books about food.

Ha! Just recently I was remembering about teasing Kelly about not having ever read Green Eggs and Ham. I was wondering if she would read Dr. Suess to her little one. :-)
I loved Strega Nona when I was little too, but I had forgotten about it. And I liked the Popcorn Book too, but the one that I liked even better when I was little was "Popcorn" by Frank Asch. Have you ever read that one? It has been out of print for years, but just before Christmas I was able to track down a copy of it for my girls on amazon.com. More recent favorite food books are Miss. Spider's Tea Party, and one that every mother of a little girl must know about now is Pinkalicious and her pink cupcakes.

You started with dieting and ended with cookies - love it!
I detest lima beans, and there you went and reminded me of them! Yuck!

Love the other books though!

hee hee! Dr. Suess!

What fun times watching Reading Rainbow as a child! Thanks for the memory!

My favorite food book is Cook-a-doodle-doo by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

My kids love the book about "Little Pea". His parents make him eat all different kinds of candy (which he detests) so that he can get to dessert--SPINACH! It is great, because I am not a green pea-eater.

On a side-note, reading your blog often gives me my "teaching bug" back!
